Demon children 18 August 2009
Isabelle Fuhrman as Esther in Orphan courtesy of Optimum Releasing
Why are we fascinated by the 'evil child' in films?

They are presented as innocents who have been possessed by malignant external forces or monsters who can’t help the way they are or sometimes they are presented as just plain bad people. Images of evil children continue to be popular with film directors. With the release of Orphan, Jane is joined by folklorist Diane Purkiss and film writer Michelle LeBlanc to look at the origins of this theme, and investigate why we seem to come back to it again and again.

Orphan, directed by Jaume Collet-Serra is currently on general release.
