 On coping with the loss of her daughter and preparing to face her killer at his Parole Board hearing.
Marie McCourt’s daughter, Helen, was murdered on her way home from work over 21 years ago. Her body has never been found. Ian Simms, a pub landlord who lived in the same village as the family, was tried and sentenced to life imprisonment for Helen’s murder - based on “overwhelming” DNA evidence from blood stains found on his clothing. Now his parole is coming up and as part of a new Home Office scheme, Marie can apply to be present at the parole board hearing to make a statement about the impact Helen’s murder has had on her family. She has a number of reservations about these hearings. Marie joins Jenni to explain how she coped with her daughter's death and how it inspired her to help hundreds of other families bereaved by murder. Also taking part to explain the new parole board rules is John Atkins, Secretary of the Association of Prison Lawyers.
