 The annual tradition spanning generations
Every year on November 5th the people of Ottery St Mary in Devon get together and run through the streets with flaming tar barrels on their backs. It’s one of those traditions whose origins have been forgotten somewhere along the line, but in some cases it brings together several generations of the same family. A total of seventeen barrels are carried during the day, starting with the children at 4 o’clock in the afternoon. At 9pm it’s the turn of the women. Fiona Clampin caught up with some of the ladies involved, making some gloves in preparation for rolling the tar barrels.Ottery St Mary Tar BarrelsDisclaimer
