From a princess in exile to a poacher's widow
The National Gallery’s new exhibition “Renaissance Faces” features a remarkable collection of female portraits. Painted across Renaissance Europe from England in the North to Florence in the South, these portraits provide a fascinating insight into the lives of 15th and 16th century women. Jane discusses some of the intriguing personalities on display - from a princess in exile, to a poacher’s widow and an ugly duchess alongside the complex role of women in Renaissance society. Jane is joined by historian Gaia Servadio, the author of “Women in the Renaissance” and the lead curator of the exhibition Susan Foister.
