Women in the Garden 25th September 2008
Is there a ‘grass ceiling’ in gardening preventing women getting the top jobs?

When Carol Klein didn’t get the job of lead presenter on Gardener’s World recently, she was quoted as saying there was a ‘grass ceiling’ in gardening and the programme’s message board was filled with viewers wondering why the job has never been given to a woman. Certainly there has never been a woman entrusted with the job, while the likes of Monty Don, Alan Titchmarsh, Geoff Hamilton and now Toby Buckland all taking their turn as the nation’s head gardener. So if there is a bias against women with secateurs, how far does it spread and what difference does it make to those of us who enjoy a good potter in our own back yard.

Sheila McClennon is joined by Anne Beswick,Garden Designer and Eric Robson, presenter of Gardeners’ Question Time for the last 15 years.
