 The Malian Tracy Chapman.
With its gentle mix of African and Western rhythms, Rokia Traoré’s music has earned her an international following. Early in her career Rokia became known in her country as the ‘Malian Tracy Chapman’ through her use of a guitar and her socially responsible lyrics. Yet she is no stranger to controversy; when she shaved her head it was perceived by some as a step too far. Now at 34, she divides her time between her homeland, Mali, and France. Her second album, Wanita, was nominated for a BBC World Music Award and the follow-up, Bowmboϊ, was voted ‘World Music Album of 2003’ in the BBC Critics’ Poll.Rokia joins Jenni to sing live and talk about her background, her musical influences and her career.
'Tchamentche', the new album from Rokia is reeased on 8 Sept 2008
