 Celebrating the novelist and biographer
Penelope Fitzgerald is now universally accepted to have been a great writer. She was three times shortlisted for the Booker and won it for her novel “Offshore”. But her success came relatively late in her life and it was only really with her last novel, “The Blue Flower”, set in Germany at the end of the eighteenth century, that she found international fame. Penelope Fitzgerald died in 2000 but her letters to her family, friends and others in the writing world have just been published. They cast light on an extraordinary life, which Jenni discusses with Tina Fitzgerald, Penelope’s daughter, and the writer Julian Barnes.
