 The women founders of the Royal Academy of Arts
The word ‘Bluestocking’ has often been used pejoratively to describe spinster-like, bookish women, but it originated as a term that celebrated a group of talented and educated women from the 18th Century. The National Portrait Gallery is currently holding a major exhibition to celebrate these cultivated women. Anna McNamee visited the gallery to find out about two painters who were among the founding members of the Royal Academy of Art: Mary Moser and Angelica Kauffmann. Anna was joined by the co-curators of the exhibition, Lucy Peltz 18th Century Curator at the National Portrait Gallery and Elizabeth Eger, lecturer in English at King’s College, University of London.
