A Bleak Future for Kids' TV? 5 Dec 2007

With budget cuts looming, can quality shows for children survive?

Last week the Children's Baftas were described as the 'defining wake for children's TV' and leading presenters and programme-makers warned that young people's television would disintegrate unless the Government acted. A recent Ofcom report found that broadcasters were focusing on cartoons and US imports and spending less on home-made programmes. ITV has pulled out of children's production, while the BBC has cut its children's budget by ten per cent. So can quality shows for children survive?

Jenni talks to Anna Home Chief Executive of Children’s Film and TV foundation and chair of Save Kids’ TV, Anne Gilchrist the Controller of CBBC, and Nick Wilson, Director of children’s programming for Channel Five.
