Life Begins at Sixty! 14 Aug

How 'Baby Boomers' are redefining the decade of retirement.

Woman’s Hour takes a special look at the decade of our lives that has traditionally marked retirement – our sixties. The current generation of sixty-something women has lived though immense social change, but are these 'baby boomers' now reinventing the decade in which people used to collect their pensions and go off quietly into retirement?

Increasing numbers of us are choosing to keep working, and many of us now need to stay in employment to survive financially. We discuss the current state of pensions and we look at the impact that working longer will have on our lives.

When we do take the plunge and retire – what do we do next? We hear about the new ways in which we are spending our time and what we’re planning to do in the future.

Jenni discusses these issues with the editor of SAGA, Emma Soames, Former Conservative Minister, Edwina Currie, Ruth Lea, Head of the Centre for Policy Studies and Independent Pensions Advisor, Dr Ros Altmann. They are joined by Prof Sarah Vickerstaff from the University of Kent, Heather Wakefield, of the public service union, UNISON and comedy writer Jan Etherington.
