For the past three months women students from the Jamia Hafsa madrassa - a radical religious school in Pakistan - have been causing controversy in the capital, Islamabad. Gangs of burkha wearing students have raided brothels and video shops - denouncing them as "un-Islamic", and hundreds of women are staging an ongoing occupation of the children’s library. They are demanding the introduction of sharia or Islamic law throughout the country and have threatened violence if their demands are not met. But why would women campaign for a law that is seen by many as misogynistic, undermining the rights of women?
