Family
Sibling Special 26 Mar 2007
The Bronte Sisters
In a special edition of the programme, Woman’s Hour explores relationships between siblings in adulthood. Whether you are the oldest, middle or youngest child can affect you a great deal in childhood, but it’s often a source of shame and disappointment when those tensions continue into adult life. Adult siblings can often be as competitive as when they were young.
How do life changes, such as having children, alter the relationship you have with your siblings? As parents get older and need caring for, is there even more pressure to be the dutiful one? Or have you found that getting older has brought you closer to your siblings?
Ritula discusses these issues with Juliet Mitchell, Professor of Psychoanalysis and Gender Studies at Jesus College, Cambridge and author of Siblings, Dorothy Rowe, psychologist and author of My Dearest Enemy, My Dangerous Friend: Making and Breaking Sibling Bonds and Terri Apter, Senior Tutor at Newnham College, Cambridge and author of The Sister Knot.
