Called “Princess Personality”, “and Dancing Divinity”, Jessie Matthews danced and sang her way from poverty to the theatre and the big screen. She captured the hearts of pre-war musical lovers with her sex appeal and wide-eyed innocence. After the Second World War, her career dwindled, but she re-invented herself in the 1960s, when she became Mrs Dale in the radio soap Mrs Dale's Diary. To mark the 100th anniversary of her birth, the National Film Theatre is screening 10 of her films. Martha will be talking to the NFT’s curator Richard Stirling, and Anne Rogers who played Jessie in the theatre production of her life, “Over My Shoulder”. They discuss how her persona in front of the camera, concealed 'behind the scenes' suffering from many personal tragedies and nervous breakdowns.National Film Theatre at BFIDisclaimer
