Should conduct in private life affect right to hold public office?
Tory women have rounded on the North Wiltshire MP, James Gray, after he lost a deselection vote following his affair with a married countryside campaigner whilst his wife was suffering from breast cancer. Mr Gray’s political career now hangs on the result of a postal vote of 1,000 local party members in the New Year. Margaret Histed, the chairman of the local Conservative Association said: ‘Most women feel that a deception on that sort of scale was unforgiveable. How could one ever trust a man like that again?’ Are women more moralistic than men in believing conduct in private life should influence right to hold a public office, and if so, are they justified?
Jenni is joined by Margaret Cook, the ex-wife of the late Robin Cook MP and former parliamentary candidate, Sue Catling, who was deselected by Calder Valley Conservative Association.
