IVF – Is it the wrong answer to the wrong question?
IVF has been much in the news this year. Some doctors have said that middle age mums are a drain on NHS resources and they suggest that women complete their families by the age of 35. Headlines were also made when the fertility expert, Dr Gillian Lockwood, said women in their 20s/30 should routinely freeze their eggs in order to give them a greater chance of success in their future if they required IVF. And the Government has also signalled that it will jettison the “need for a father” clause when they update the 1990 Human Fertilisation and Embryoloy Act.
Dr Lockwood, and a strong critic of IVF, the journalist Yvonne Roberts, join Jenni Murray to discuss whether IVF is the wrong answer to the wrong question – is there is too much emphasis on getting a child and not enough on dealing with either the reasons for childlessness or childlessness itself?
