Pockets 9 October 2006
18th Century linen pocket with exuberant embroidery, Museum of Costume, Bath
Lucy Locket lost hers, and Dickens's Artful Dodger was partial to picking them. Historically worn under the skirts of women's clothing or around their waists, pockets were essential items in which 18th Century women carried their belongings. So what has their role been and what do pockets tell us about women's lives through the ages?

Martha is joined by social historian, Barbara Burman, responsible for a current exhibition of pockets at the Museum of Costume, in Bath and Malcolm McInnes, designer, and academic programme leader for fashion and textiles at the University of Brighton.
