This afternoon on Radio 4 'Heft like the Herdwick', a play written by a group of Cumbrian women is broadcast. The ten women were brought together after they answered an advert placed in a farming magazine asking: "What is a rural woman in the 21 st century?". Although a disparate bunch in terms of age, career path and experience - what they had in common was that they all lived in the Lake District. Some of the women were local and some 'offcomers ' - outsiders who had moved and settled in the area. From this the project began to go deeper exploring the theme of belonging and what it means to be local.
