Madeleine Albright on her new book 22 May 2006
Madeleine Albright
In 1997, Bill Clinton appointed Madeleine Albright as Secretary of State, the first woman ever to hold the position. During her time in office, she became one of the most renowned figures in American politics. But she also pursued an academic career teaching international affairs, and in her new book, The Mighty and the Almighty, she argues that the West has radically underplayed the role of religion in international diplomacy.

Madeleine Albright tells Jenni Murray that only by building in an understanding of the importance of religion in the modern world, can democracies hope to play an effective role in reducing conflict.

The Mighty and the Almighty: Reflections on Power, God, and World Affairs, Macmillan, ISBN 1405091606
