My Parson Jack Russell was deeply hurt by James' dismissive comment on the use of William. He has proudly answered to this name since early puppyhood, when he displayed all the qualities of a canine equivalent of Richmal Crompton's "Just William". As you may suppose from the attached, he has done nothing during his 6 years to suggest this was a hasty choice. He has asked me to advise on his behalf, as a regular listener to the Today programme, that he will, in future, be avoiding Mr Naughtie's deceptively kindly tones.
