Batty: named thus 14 years ago, because of her enormous (then out of proportion) batwing ears. Bonkers: a thirteen year old lurcher, named about twelve years ago when she deposited herself on our doorstep and refused to go away. A fruitless search for owners meant we adopted her and named her Bonkers:- 1. To complement Batty, 2. In homage to John Irving's 'The World According to Garp', and 3. Because she was - clearly - bonkers by nature. Our children castigate us frequently for naming our dogs 'to cause embarrassment', and strangers look askance at us when we call them to heel duiring walks. A friend of ours has a dog named 'Duck', which is a contraction of 'Ducking' - which itself is only half of his full name, 'Ducking Fog' .... a Spoonerism.
