"Silence may focus the mind but, if it’s busy with lots of anxieties and ideas, noise can be a useful distraction. My abstract pieces look very organized and composed, but the process is very instinctive as I concentrate on each little part as it emerges rather than the bigger picture. The rhythm of music helps me to progress the work as it moves ever forward, but sometimes it's good to listen to a conversation because people's views are governed by an innate grammar or logic - which is just like the impulsive sense I rely on to create a picture."
