"During lonely hours of painting, the BBC is my sole companion. Its impartial reporting of news from around the world is refreshing amongst so much bigotry and partisanship, as symbolised here. Leaders have always encouraged national identity since their status depends upon it but, if examined more dispassionately, it may be understood as a self- congratulatory fantasy, derived merely from an accident of birth. Only when it is realised that no nation possesses a monopoly of truth or status over another and is therefore not worth killing or dying for, will peace between nations be possible.
