"I can find myself painting in the studio for long periods of time, occasionally eleven hours at a stretch. With Radio 4 on, and wearing headphones, I feel that the programmes are there for me alone and people are sharing their feelings and stories quietly in my ears. Indeed sometimes it can be so painful or horrific that I cannot work through tears. I first heard Billy Collins, the American poet, on Radio 4 and have done several paintings from his poems. Radio 4 distracts a part of my mind that can be over analytical or judgmental, and allows the more creative unconscious to surface. I love it and can't work without it."
