"As I work in my studio every afternoon, Radio 4 is like having a comfortable, intelligent and amusing friend sitting on the couch discussing all sorts of things in which I am interested. I really enjoy it. At times I don't listen properly at other times I join in the talk but the programmes go merrily on whatever I am up to. I never feel isolated or in need of company but my private space remains inviolate. What more can one ask of a friend?"
