"If I paint in silence my mind wanders onto day-to-day matters. This impairs concentration. Having been professionally involved in music I cannot use it as background: I become too involved and find it distracting. The perfect answer is Radio 4. I am amused, educated, informed and stimulated by its wide variety of programmes. The intellect is occupied while eyes and hands go to work. I can look at any part of the picture and know what I was listening to when I painted it. You and Yours, The News Quiz, The Archers ... they're all in there somewhere."
