"Insanity would be my companion were it not for Radio 4, when I’m sitting painting, filling in the details I love struggling with. I do find myself escaping to Radio 3 when the programmes start repeating themselves – although it’s not as effective as the spoken word for occupying that part of my brain not filled with hue and line. The reverse is also true – radio is not there to be listened to on its own. It creates a continuously varying mood conducive to creativity, which I’m sure is at least in part to blame for the oddness of my paintings!"
