Wendy Jacob
Wendy Jacob "Best of all it makes me laugh out loud."

My first memory of Radio 4 dates from my first medical inspection at primary school. When the doctor asked me what time I went to bed, I told her "after Dick Barton." "That's far too late," she replied, "you should be in bed by half past six."

Dick Barton, Special Agent filled the spot now occupied by The Archers. All my family were hooked on this exciting thriller which ended every episode with a cliffhanger and my bed time stayed firmly after Dick Barton.

It firmly established me as a radio addict. The radio is always on in the studio when I am working. It settles me into the right mood - I suppose I am conditioned to paint with my familiar radio friends entertaining and informing me. Being a painter is essentially a solitary activity and days can pass with very little interaction with other people. Without Radio 4, with its particular remit of news, science and arts programmes, drama and all the other wonderful odd series that pop up (like the recent one on philosophy) I would have lost touch with the outside world. Best of all it makes me laugh out loud.
Wendy Jacob was born in Wigan, Lancashire and brought up and educated in London, studying at the Hammersmith College of Art. From 1963 to 1990 she was a freelance illustrator for national newspapers, magazines, and books (including Elizabeth David's Bread Book). She began painting in the 1980s and started exhibiting in 1989. Since then she has contributed work to some 40 exhibitions. She was elected an Associate of the Royal Watercolour Society in 2005.

She writes: "I approached my earlier work as an illustrator, painting mainly still life and interiors. Landscape has become my main preoccupation in recent years, using tone to create strong form and explore the transformation that different light brings to a subject, looking for the spirit and atmosphere of the place rather than a topographical rendering."
