Sheila Findlay
Sheila Findlay "I like to keep in touch by listening to news and current affairs programmes."

Radio 4 is a direct and thought-provoking link with what's going on in the world beyond the four walls of my studio. I like to keep in touch by listening to news and current affairs programmes. I'm interested in the international news stories in From Our Own Correspondent and in cultural news that's closer to home in review shows like Front Row. I am particularly keen on any programmes on recent history. I also like The Food Programme and Gardeners' Question Time. Although not a dedicated gardener, I have a large garden and I am always interested in any tips.

I listen to the radio before I start work and when I take a break for coffee. I don't always have the radio on throughout the day. When I begin a painting I tend to listen to Radio 4 sporadically in between periods of decision making. In the later stages when I'm making final adjustments to the balance and design of the image, listening to the radio can open up interesting avenues of thought. Like reading a good book, or attending an exhibition, listening to Radio 4 stimulates me and keeps me moving forward - ready to begin the next set of work.
Born in 1928 in Angus, Scotland, Sheila Findlay studied art at Edinburgh College of Art 1945-1951 and specialised in stained glass and mural painting with Leonard Rosoman. Her post-graduate studies, 1949-1950, were followed by and award of a year's travelling scholarship in France, Italy and Sweden.

Sheila moved to London in 1951, working as a freelance designer/illustrator in Chelsea. She produced work for leading publishing houses such as Faber & Faber, Bodley Head, Adprint, The Medici Society, etc. She exhibited in The Royal Academy, Young Contemporaries, The London Group, Paintings for Schools, and Britain in Watercolours.

Sheila currently lives and works in Kent, spending part of the year in her studio in Edinburgh. She was elected a Member of the Royal Watercolour Society in 1969.
