Richard Sorrell was born in 1948. Drawing and painting have been central in his life since childhood, when he was surrounded by the pictures and working environment of his parents (his father was the well-known watercolourist Alan Sorrell). Richard studied at the Walthamstow Art School, Kingston College of Art and finally at the Royal Academy Schools.
His work is divided into objective, descriptive painting on one hand, in the form of landscapes, still life, etc, and inventions on the other hand, which are his imaginative figurative paintings. Sorrell firmly believes that an artist should be an active member of society and not an exile from it, and that art is strongest when it is closely connected to society.
He writes: "My objective is to make strong images, which people will respond to immediately and will not tire of easily."
Richard is a Member of the Royal Watercolour Society and the New English Art Club. He is also a Member of the Royal Society of British Artists, and a Governor of the Mall Galleries. His work is in many public collections including the Victoria & Albert Museum, The Museum of London, The National Trust and Norwich City Council.
