Paul Hawdon
Paul Hawdon "I was one of the main Studio Managers to work on the original series of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy."

Radio 4 has influenced my working environment for many years. Shortly after leaving school I worked for the BBC, first in the Sound Archives and then later as a Studio Manager. I was one of the main Studio Managers to work on the original series of The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.

Since this time I often listen to Radio 4 as I work to keep me in touch with the outside world. It has been interesting to hear the gradual progress of Hitchhikers' into an icon of radio history.

I have listened with mixed amusement and frustration as Radio 4 has ebbed and flowed with the changes in political climate and political correctness and sometimes these feelings have been reflected in my work.
Concepts
The themes that emerge from my work are a love of the world, people and landscape contrasted with a concern about their possible progress. To contrast hard-edged short-term ideas and structures with the ebb and flow of long-term human values.

Influences
Printmaking, etching, painting, landscape, Piranesi, Rome, Apocalypse, colour, surface, architecture, Sarah Kane, Thomas Bernhard.

Career path
I studied painting and printmaking at Saint Martin's School of Art and the Royal Academy Schools of Art. I have been awarded a year-long Italian Government Scholarship and also the Prix de Rome in Printmaking. I have had a residency at Radley College, Oxfordshire. I produce occasional works to commission, most recently three etchings for the Cancer Research UK Institute for Cancer Studies in Birmingham.
