Janet Brooke
Janet Brooke "... certain pieces of work will forever be associated with what I was listening to at the time."

I work in the studio at the bottom of my garden with a small paint-streaked transistor radio permanently tuned to Radio 4 and woe betide any member of the family who borrows it and does a bit of retuning.

Maybe it's an age thing (I'm probably the right demographic group: middle aged, middle class and female) brought up on Listen with Mother, Children's House, Two-way Family Favourites, Journey from Outer Space, Around the Home, The Goon Show ... it just seems natural; the comfort of familiar human voices and news on the hour.

It's like an old family friend: well loved, informative, interesting and often extremely annoying.

It's the background to my working day. Sometimes I miss things or miss-hear them (though that's not really a problem with good old Radio 4 because it's bound to be repeated at least once!). Sometimes I just have to stop everything to listen to a gem like I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue and sometimes I have to make a dive to turn it off (for any phone-in for example).

I don't think my work has ever been directly influenced by anything I've heard on the radio but certain pieces of work will forever be associated with what I was listening to at the time.

From our own Correspondent, I'm Sorry I haven't a Clue, Thinking Allowed, A Good Read, Broadcasting House, The Food Programme, Gardeners' Question Time, Afternoon Play, Woman's Hour, The Archers and North Utsire, South Udsire, Dogger, Fisher, German Bight ...
After studying at Birmingham and Brighton Polytechnics, Janet taught printmaking at Newham College of Further Education until June 2000 and she now works from her studio in Bow, East London.

She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Painter Printmakers and a founder member of East London Printmakers. Articles

Since giving up full time teaching, she led print workshops in a variety of institutions including schools, colleges and museums.

In April 2002 she completed the Magic Me Artists Training Scheme and since then has worked on three inter-generational artist-led projects with them.

In 2003 she was Artist in Residence at Chingford Foundation School and Whitgift School, Croydon. She also ran a series of printmaking workshops at Camden School for Girls and worked on the Tower Hamlets Gifted and Talented Summer School and is working on printmaking projects with pupils from two local schools.
