Anna Gillespie
Anna Gillespie "...if my intellectual mind is occupied ... the unconscious mind/hand is free to work without too much intervention and general troublemaking by consciousness."

I was working intensively and in isolation, my radio documenting day by day the seemingly inevitable slide towards conflict in the run up to the war in Iraq. One recurring theme of my work is captivity, in which I have both a political and personal interest, and which is something that is often covered on news programmes.

I also use the radio simply as an antidote to the solitude of the studio. In general I listen to The World At One and Woman's Hour. The news tells me what is happening in the world outside my four walls. Woman's Hour often tells me what is happening in other people's personal lives. Either the world comes in or I mentally travel out. I'm not sure which was round it goes.

On a more prosaic level I think that that mental travel can simply help time pass whilst doing repetitive work. There is a way too in which if my intellectual mind is occupied in a way that Radio 4 is particularly good at doing, the unconscious mind/hand is free to work without too much intervention and general troublemaking by consciousness.
Anna Gillespie was born in 1964. Having obtained degrees from Oxford University (Philosophy, Politics and Economics) and the London School of Economics (International Relations), 1992 saw a change of direction and the decision to become a full time sculptor.

Anna qualified as a stone mason in Bath before travelling to Italy to study with the sculptor and master carver Nigel Konstam.

In 1998 she took an MA in Fine and Media Arts at Cheltenham, and became an Associate of the Royal Society of British Sculptors in 1999. She now works in Bristol, where she lives with her young family.
