Ladder 49 and Rescue Me.
John Wilson looks at two new dramas about the heroic exploits of American Firemen. The Film Ladder 49 stars Joaquim Phoenix and John Travolta - while Rescue Me with Dennis Leary has been one of the most successful tv dramas in America. Now it's started in Britain on Sky 1.

Rescue Me is on Sky 1 on Thursday nights at 10pm. Ladder 49 certificate 12A is released in cinemas around the country from Friday 21st January.


Jazz in the Cold War:Satchmo Blows Up the World
How the US government used jazz musicians such as Louis Armstrong and Dizzy Gillespie as ambassadors of propaganda during the Cold War - John Wilson talks to the author of a new book Penny Von Eschen.

Satchmo Blows Up the World is published by Harvard University Press


A tribute to Conroy Maddox
The surrealist painter Conroy Maddox has died aged 92. His biographer Silvano Levy talked to John Wilson about this founder member of the British surrealist group.

Silvano Levy is the author of The Scandalous Eye - The Surrealism of Controy Maddox published by Liverpool University Press


Wildflowers in Art
The competition for British Wildlife Photographer of 2005 has just been launched. The categories include In Praise of Plants and are on display at the National History Museum and on tour to various venues around London.

It's one of three exhibitions currently touring Britain which take the garden into the gallery - Bob Dickinson reports.

Jaques Nimki's work can be seen in the Art of the Garden exhibition from Tate Britain which opens at the Manchester Art Gallery in March - his work is also on show alongside Ruth Moilliet's in Adventurous Wildflowers which also opens in March at the Durham Museum.
