10 January 2005

Presented by Mark Lawson

Listen to the programme

Million Dollar Baby
Clint Eastwood's latest film deals with boxing and the fight for life. Mark Lawson and actor and writer Kerry Shale - who is currently adapting the boxing story The Harder They Fall for Radio 4 - review the film.

Million Dollar Baby is released nationwide on Friday 14 January, certificate 12A

Blasphemy and broadcasting
With a Christian group planning a private prosecution against the BBC for last Saturday's broadcast of Jerry Springer, the Opera, Mark Lawson and lawyer Duncan Lamont discuss the relevant British blasphemy laws.

Jerry Springer, the Opera is at the Cambridge Theatre, London

Spamalot
The film comedy Monty Python and the Holy Grail has been turned into a stage musical by Eric Idle and has just opened in Chicago - with Tim Curry as King Arthur, David Hyde Pierce as Sir Robin, and Hank Azaria as Sir Lancelot. Mark Lawson and Michael Phillips, theatre critic for the Chicago Tribune newspaper, review the production.

Monty Python's Spamalot is at Chicago's Shubert Theatre until 23 January, before heading to Broadway

10 Minute Musical Challenge
In February, Greenwich Theatre presents its first ever Ten Minute Musical Challenge. Competition entrants have to consult The Times newspaper of 10 January 2005, pick a story which they think could be turned into a musical - and then have to write 10 minutes of lyrics, or compose 10 minutes of music, in just 24 hours.

Mark Lawson discusses the practicalities and the pitfalls with Ellie Jones, the project director, and with two competitors: composer Robert Archibold and lyricist, Jody Trehy.

The Crouches
Mark Lawson and writer and critic Vanessa Walters review the return of BBC One's mainstream black sitcom, The Crouches. The first series was much-criticised for having a white creative and production team - but new personnel have been brought in, headed by producer Paulette Randall. Has their presence made a difference?

The Crouches begins on BBC One on Monday 10 January, at 10.35pm
