In 2004, the singer and songwriter Ray Davies received the CBE, was shot in the leg in New Orleans, and saw the album The Kinks are the Village Green Preservation Society re-issued to great acclaim. He reflects on Englishness, America and some of his best-loved songs, in conversation with John Wilson.
