Classical Gods on the Musical Stage
A rarely performed musical by Kurt Weill, One Touch of Venus opens this week in Leeds. It tells the story of a statue of Venus which comes to life in 1940s New York and is horrified to discover how dull people's lives are. Earlier this year Chichester Festival Theatre had a popular and critical succes with a rarely performed Cole Porter musical Out Of This World which tells the story of Jupiter coming to earth to seduce a 1950s Hollywood starlet. Front Row brought together the director of One Touch of Venus, Tim Albery, Jason Carr from Chichester Festival Theatre and musicals historian Brett Kahr to discuss what happens when immortals meet mortals on the musical stage.

One Touch of Venus is on at Leeds Grand Theatre then tours to Hull, Sheffield, Salford, Nottingham, Norwich, Newcastle, Belfast and comes to London in November next year.
