Essential Mix - Nottingham Reviews

DJ C posted 22 Oct 2002:

CLUBS: The Bomb is the sort of club that is impossible to visit just once. You won't find a friendlier atmosphere or more diverse, forward-thinking music policy anywhere in the country. Think Fabric but squeezed into a tiny, white-walled, subterranean space, with double the atmosphere but none of the stand-offish attitude that you so often find in the capital. This is clubbing according to the doctrine of acid house - no commercially-sponsored nights, no podium dancers and no neanderthal security. Simply quality underground music over two intimate rooms with an enthusiastic, knowledgeable crowd, and a reputation borne out by the roster of DJs it boasts week-on-week.

CLUBS: Media, a breathtaking venue beautifully converted from a listed Theatre. Its lost its way a bit since the mighty Renaissance checked out earlier this year, but still boasts a series of decent nights. As an alternative, the hedonistic Lost Weekend club also never fails to disappoint. If you're still pining for dark 'n dirty, Bomb-style sounds, head for Edge or the Beetroot. Recent addition Snug amply caters for the more glam crowd.

RECORD SHOPS: Unable to get that night-defining track out of your head the next day? Then seek out the excellent Funky Monkey records in Hockley, frequented by many a star DJ. Or perhaps sift through the legions of vinyl and CDs stocked by the ever-reliable Selectadisc off Market Square. Enjoy yourselves!

DJ's: Dave Congreve is the resident at the Bomb and he is completely blinding. Week after week me and my mates go down to the Bomb and are treated to amazing sets of jacking, techy, funky cracking sounds. He is without doubt one of the best DJ's around and has a sound that really sums up what the Bomb is all about. You won't get any trance, hard house or commercial nonsense, just quality underground sounds....its amazing down there. With the likes of Derrick Carter, Layo and Bushwacka and the mighty Sasha having played down there you can imagine what to expect.

BARS: Dogma (just down the road from the Bomb) is a cool place to visit, excellent for people watching, quality music and a brilliant 3 level venue. Hockley has loads of bars along the same lines with late licences and good music. Try the Market Bar, Eleven, Brass Monkeys, and the Living Room for some classy drinking in nice surroundings. It's a brilliant city, made even better by the Bomb.
