Norman Cook talks about Ibiza '98

It's 9:30pm on a Thursday evening and after just jumping off his plane from
London, man of the moment Norman Cook (aka Fatboy Slim), is sitting at the bar
in the Manumission Motel. It's going to be a busy few days here, there's a guest
slot on the Breakfast Show tomorrow morning, the back room of Manumission to DJ
on Saturday Night, Dave Pearce's show from Bar M on Sunday, oh yeah, and
tomorrow, it's his Birthday. Something tells us, the party is just about
to begin.
So Norman, what are you up to over here?
I'm Dj-ing and having a bit of a holiday as well. I'll be playing at
Manumission on Saturday, but we're doing the back room, which is actually
larger than most clubs in England, so it's still well worth doing. Basically
though, we're just here to have a party. Over here it's more of a 'we're on
holiday so let's have a party' vibe, so I'm going to be playing my bright
and breezy party set, rather than the moody one.
Is that quite new for Ibiza or is everyone over here doing that ?
Well I did Manumission 3 times last year, and it kind of worked, but the
first time I played was with Jon Carter. We got there, looked at each other
and Jon said, "How many house records have you got?", and I said, "About 10",
and he said, "Yeah so have I, we'll probably be able to do this", because
that's how it is over here, it's up and it's fun and that's the whole point
of coming here on holiday.
You've been to Ibiza before. What is it about the island that you like ?
I don't know, there's something in the water, a definite madness, even tonight,
most of us have just got here and already Zoe Ball's dancing on the deck chairs
around the swimming pool. Manumission, where I play, means freedom and there's
something in that. I dance here and I don't normally dance in at clubs in
England, because you think, oh no, people will be watching me going "Ooh, no,
he's a crap dancer", but here there's just something about it where you
forget about all the restrictions and constrictions and you just feel free.
And it works on all levels from the San Antonio beer boys to the beautiful
people & the transvestites, there is something about it where everyone just
feel free to wave their arms about in the air and not worry about being cool.
