Sasha's Desert Island Disco
Updated 05 Oct 2006
For the first ever live Blue Room from Ibiza, Chris Coco caught up with Sasha to find out which 3 big tunes he'd take with him for the perfect Ibiza chillout...
Chris Coco: If you were going to go on this chillout excursion, to get away from nightclubs and studios, where would you go? Sasha: I went to the Greek Islands last year, and we just rented a little boat and sailed. It was complete freedom, because I can't drive a car, and so a lot of the time when I travel, going to all these places all the time, I'm kind of stuck and I don't really get to make my own itineraries.
What's the first track that you've chosen?
I chose Steve Reich - 'Music For 18 Musicians'. It's something that we listened to a lot while we were working on my record, and it's just the most beautiful sort of minimalist classical piece of music, it sucks you it, it's amazing, it does weird things to you! It sounds like an electronic record, but it's all acoustic instruments, and the sound that they create is just overwhelming.
Was that kind of sound an influence on you in making your album?
Yeah, I think so. We listened to a lot of things, like Fridge and Susumu Yokota. At the end of the night, when you've been working on a track all day, if you don't purge your system with different music before you go to bed, you end up dreaming about basslines and waking up with the record in your head!
I was quite surprised with your album. I thought it would be more clubby and more 'up' than it is. It's actually quite chilled, and a lot of it is very atmospheric music.
I guess I always wanted to make a record like Future Sound Of London and 'Leftism', those kind of records really influenced me back in the day, and I always wanted to make a record with that kind of cinematic, atmospheric sound. We just ended up with all instrumental music and we didn't really start out like that, we were going to do vocals and songs, but it just developed into an instrumental album.
It's great that you haven't gone the cheese route of getting in guest vocalists...
I wanted to make something that was going to sit on the shelf a little bit longer. I think a lot of dance albums have one big hit and the rest of it's filler. I wanted to make something that worked as a piece of music, and yeah, something that was going to sit on the shelves for longer than a couple of weeks.
What's your second Desert Island Disco selection?
I was just talking about Susumu Yokota, because that was another record we listened to in the studio when we were working on the album. It's on Leaf Records - it's just absolutely beautiful.
What's the track called?
I don't know the actual title! It's something from the album... I don't think we actually got to the end of this album. We kept on putting it on every night when we got back to the apartment, and we always ended up passing out halfway through!
Tell us a bit about Ibiza - is it a place where you can chill out or a party place?
I think it's both. The island's definitely got two sides. If you go there for a very short visit, you usually end up going completely mental and not having time to relax, but whenever I go for a week, you try and balance out one big night, and spend the rest of the time up the north part of the island. It's just beautiful. There are some lovely old converted farmhouses that you can stay in, and some great restaurants - everything's tucked out of the way, well away from San Antonio.
Where would you choose to go, if you chose on place, that you don't mind telling people about?
There's a little hotel right up in the north. It's got 12 rooms and it's family-run - it's just absolutely beautiful.
So, one more Desert Island Selection - something that you play in that hotel, hopefully...
I think the Chapterhouse 'Bloodmusic' album, that's something I've listened to over the last 5 or 6 years. It's really been quite influential.
