with Connie McLaughlin
Connie McLaughlin asks does education need to get back to basics? Also on the show, the mental load, supermarket price cap and flat tyres.
EDUCATION
An international study of education standards published this morning shows Scotland has fallen behind England. Levels of reading and maths have declined.
Scotland is still above the average, and the latest results show an improvement in science but the country has dropped in the ratings for two decades and is now behind England. Connie asks: Does education needs to get back to basics? And how do we get kids reading?
THE MENTAL LOAD
This week, the BBC spoke to parents about the "mental load". They heard that mums in heterosexual relationships often feel like the "default" parent and heard from one mum about how she goes to sleep every night with a "mental to-do list". Academics have found women take on 71% of household tasks like parent WhatsApp groups, knowing when towels and bedding need washed and what food needs eaten by what date. Connie asks: do we take the mental load seriously enough?
SUPERMARKET PRICE CAP
The SNP committed to introducing price controls by the end of the year in a manifesto published before Holyrood elections in May, framing the scheme as a health measure. Similar initiatives have been implemented in Hungary and Croatia and the UK government encouraged supermarkets to consider voluntary price caps on foodstuffs in May. When he unveiled his programme for government last week John Swinney confirmed he's still planned to introduce a legally binding price cap on bread, milk and other essential food items in Scotland despite fierce opposition from farming and business groups. Connie asks: do you think the supermarket price cap is a good idea?
FLAT TYRE
Connie wants your flat tyre stories! Where have you had one? Can you fix one?
