Mystery Infection

Episode 6 of 6

Kye’s abscess hasn't responded to treatment, and it's possible the 26-year-old’s drug use has caused complications. 88-year-old Lady Carole needs surgery to retain her mobility.

26-year-old Kye is rushed into Resus suffering alcohol withdrawal seizures, but ED consultant Hazel is also concerned about an abscess on his arm that has failed to respond to treatment. Hazel questions Kye about his drug use and uncovers a possible cause for his resistance to antibiotics. She consults with the microbiology team, and in the meantime, begins a different treatment.

After a motorbike crash, older couple Ken and Carol are brought into the emergency department, with Ken in extreme pain. Scans reveal six fractured ribs, putting 82-year-old Ken at high risk of serious complications. As anaesthetists work to control his pain and monitor his condition upstairs, his wife Carol, who was riding pillion and has fractured fingers herself, waits overnight on a chair in the emergency department.

Elsewhere, trauma team leader Jules treats 88-year-old Lady Carole, who has fractured her leg while walking her dog in the garden. With her family at her side, the orthopaedic team must first stabilise the severe fracture with a plaster cast before she can undergo surgery.
