Alesha Dixon takes us to The Music Is Black Exhibition!
Feelgood tunes to make you groove! Alesha Dixon pops up at 'The Music Is Black' Exhibition to reminisce about Mis-teeq and Keith Killgo from The Blackbyrds is the Rewind Selector!
DJ Spoony serves up a brilliant selection of soulful house, classic soul, disco, RnB, UK garage, reggae, hip-hop, doo-wop, funk, dance remixes and much more.
This morning our genial host popped in to see Gary Davies to tell him about 'The Music Is Black: DJ Spoony's Selection', a special two-hour programme on BBC Sounds which features items he has chosen from the V&A East Museum's first landmark exhibition, celebrating Black British Music. Spoony was joined on the Radio 2 Breakfast show by surprise guests Mis-Teeq! Tonight on The Good Groove, Alesha Dixon talks about a photo of herself, Sabrina and Su-Elise from 2003, which features in the exhibition. This month Spoony will bring his selection of items to life by enlisting the help of Pauline Black of The Selecter, Level 42's Mark King, Beverley Knight, Femi Koleoso of Ezra Collective and many more! It's all part of the pan BBC 'The Music Is Black' season in collaboration with the V&A East Museum.
The ‘Rewind Selector’ tonight is Keith Killgo of legendary band The Blackbyrds. Formed by legendary trumpeter Donald Byrd, The Blackbyrds helped define jazz-funk, R&B and soul in the 70s. The band struck gold with their eponymous debut and classics like Do It Fluid, Walking in Rhythm, Happy Music and the iconic Rock Creek Park. Their Grammy-nominated sound has influenced generations, from 1980s Brit-funk to hip-hop icons like Tupac, De La Soul and Nas. The group will be performing at Ronnie Scott's in London on the 3rd and 4th of August.
Spoony wraps things up with a ‘Midnight Feast’ track. Think big production, lush orchestration, and the best voices in the business!
