BBC announces XM25 winners and factual development awards

The BBC has announced the first intake for its XM25 creative network for out-of-London factual and entertainment producers.

Fifteen producers – nine companies from Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, and six companies from the English regions – were selected following an application process.

The chosen producers will get in-depth sessions held over two days with BBC commissioners and other executives from areas such as multiplatform, scheduling and marketing over the coming year.

The first session takes place in BBC's Television Centre in London on 10 and 11 November 2008.

Independents Executive Krishan Arora, who is running the scheme, said: "XM25 is one of the practical steps we're taking to bring producers closer to BBC commissioning, and is part of the rollout for the ambitious plans for out of London production announced by Jana Bennett last week."

Head of Independent Commissioning in Knowledge, Richard Klein, said: "The more a producer knows about our commissioning needs and the way BBC Vision works, the better the ideas they'll develop for us.

"Improving access will, in the end, mean ideas that are more likely to hit the spot."

Elaine Bedell, Controller of Entertainment Commissioning, said: "Entertainment is doing extremely well at the BBC, but coming up with new entertainment ideas is always a challenge.

"We're keen to find fresh new projects from the sector outside London."

The full list of producers and companies is:

Wales: Rondo Media, Presentable, Telesgop

Northern Ireland: Doubleband, Green Inc, Waddell Media

Scotland: Truevision North, One Eyed Dog, Hand Pict

England: Avatar – Bristol, True North – Leeds, Burning Blue – Bath, Available Light – Bristol, North One Midlands – Birmingham, Talent TV South – Hampshire.

The BBC has also announced Factual development awards for a number of companies based outside London – Hardy and Sons, IWC, Love West, Mentorn Scotland, Scarlet, Telesgop, Tern, Waddell Media and Yap Films will all benefit from year-long project development deals focussed on specific development needs.

Each company will have an executive producer from commissioning dedicated to their ideas.
