Ruth Jones and her pet tortoise, Tom

Ruth Jones' tortoise stars in TV trail

Ruth Jones' pet tortoise, Tom, whose recent near-death experience made headline news, is to star in a new BBC Wales TV trail.

Tom, 55, who was saved from death in a glass crusher last month by workers at a Cardiff refuse plant after crawling into the domestic recycling, will make his small screen debut to promote his famous owner's new 12-week show on BBC Radio Wales.

The BAFTA-award winning actress and writer – best known as Nessa in the BBC hit show Gavin And Stacey which she co-created with James Corden – will kick off the first Ruth Jones' Sunday Brunch programme on Radio Wales on Sunday 5 October.

The promotional trail – which will run on BBC One Wales and BBC Two Wales from Monday evening – features Ruth sitting in the kitchen reading a letter from Radio Wales offering her a weekly Sunday morning show on the station.

While she ponders the offer, Tom in the background tumbles from the counter into the recycling.

BBC Wales Head of Promotions Phillip Moss says: "Tom is already a bit of a celebrity in his own right, thanks to the remarkable story of his dramatic 11th hour rescue.

"On screen he was a natural. I'd like to stress that no tortoises were hurt in the filming of the trail."

Every week listeners will be treated to a mixture of celebrity guests and callers, chat and comedy as part of the two-hour show.

Fans will also get to know Ruth's personal taste in music, with tunes played on the Sunday Brunch show chosen by the actress and writer herself.

In week one of the show, Ruth will be joined live in the studio by actress Joanna Page who stars alongside Ruth in Gavin And Stacey.

Ruth Jones' Sunday Brunch is the first commission for Ruth's Cardiff-based production company Tidy Productions who will produce the show.

Ruth Jones' Sunday Brunch, Sunday 5 October, BBC Radio Wales, 10.00am
