BBC Northern Ireland secures highlights rights for Northern Ireland international matches

BBC Northern Ireland has secured highlights rights for Northern Ireland's first two away matches in the forthcoming World Cup campaign, which kicks off this weekend.

Stephen Watson presents highlights of the game against Slovakia – the programme is on Sunday night (7 September) at 10.20pm on BBC One Northern Ireland.

BBC Northern Ireland will also be showing highlights of the second away game, against Slovenia, in October.

As part of the deal, fans can also watch a three-and-a-half minute highlights package of these two matches via the website, bbc.co.uk/ni/sport, from midday the day after the games.

For the home games in Northern Ireland's campaign, BBC Northern Ireland has already signed a deal with the IFA.

The highlights of these games will be broadcast within minutes of the final whistle.

Coverage begins next Wednesday night (10 September) when Stephen Watson introduces highlights of the clash at Windsor Park with the highly-rated group favourites, Czech Republic.

The programme starts at 11.15pm on BBC One Northern Ireland.

All matches, home and away, will be live on BBC Radio Ulster, beginning on Saturday (6 September) with a Sportsound Special from 2.00pm.

Joel Taggart is in Bratislava for live commentary on the group opener against Slovakia.

Next Wednesday night's meeting with the Czech Republic will also be live on Radio Ulster MW from 7.30pm, and live commentary will also be available via bbc.co.uk/ni/sport.

BBC Northern Ireland is also launching a special online feature, The Road To South Africa, which is also vailable via bbc.co.uk/ni/sport.

The website will offer distinct content, including video footage from the fans as they follow the team home and away, archive material, audio and video interviews, and player profiles.

Shane Glynn, BBC Northern Ireland's Editor of Sport, said: "In an ever-shifting sports rights landscape, we're delighted to be able to provide football fans with such extensive coverage of Northern Ireland's forthcoming World Cup campaign.

"BBC Radio Ulster is the only place to catch all the games live, and our TV highlights and online content will bring exciting added value to this coverage."
