5 Live celebrates 60 years of Sports Report

Sports Report, the iconic radio programme with its distinctive theme tune Out Of The Blue, celebrates 60 years on BBC Radio in January 2008.

On 3 January Mark Saggers introduces a nostalgic 5 Live Sport looking back over 60 years of radio sports coverage on a Saturday afternoon.

Des Lynam returns to the Sports Report studio with Mark Pougatch and Eleanor Oldroyd.

Special guests include Ian Payne, John Inverdale, Stuart Hall and Tony Adamson.

There will also be a variety of cameo performances from luminaries who have graced the programme throughout the last 60 years including Jimmy Armfield, who recalls being interviewed as a player on the programme.

And the Grimethorpe Colliery Band will give a live rendition of the programme's theme tune Out Of The Blue.

Sports Report is one of the longest-running programmes on British radio.

Throughout the years the show has been anchored by a host of household names, including Eamonn Andrews, Des Lynam, John Inverdale and Peter Jones, whose son Stuart will be present to reflect on his father's period at the helm.

Such presenters have helped establish the programme as a unique and much-loved part of listeners' Saturday afternoons.

The football results have been read out by the unmistakable voice of James Alexander Gordon for over 30 years.
