Leading doctor has appointment with The Archers

One of the country's most respected medical academics has been handed a role in BBC Radio 4's The Archers.

Respected for his pioneering work in human fertility research Professor Lord Robert Winston was delighted to land a role as a consultant in the world's longest running radio drama.

Professor Winston's first appearance as Hayley Tucker's medical advisor is in tonight's episode (7pm, Tuesday 2 January 2007).

He offers listeners the chance of a second opinion when he returns to Ambridge in February.

His character hopes to discover why Hayley and Roy are having problems conceiving a baby. And the options the consultant offers the Tuckers come as a shock to the would-be expectant parents.

Professor Winston joins a growing list of famous names who have appeared in The Archers including HRH Princess Margaret, Terry Wogan, Dame Judi Dench, Alan Titchmarsh, Griff Rhys Jones, Zandra Rhodes and Chris Moyles.

Professor Winston became a household name through television series including the BBC's The Story Of God, The Human Body and The Human Mind.

Later this year he is back on BBC One when the series A Child Of Our Time returns.
