Radio Cymru unveils a collection of new carols

The Welsh language has 12 new original Christmas songs after BBC Wales commissioned some of the country's best known poets, composers, musicians and producers to create a brand new collection of songs for the festive season.

All week the songs have been revealed on BBC Radio Cymru's Hywel A Nia programme.

Tomorrow (Saturday 9 December) the complete collection of songs will be broadcast on a special programme, presented by Wales' National Poet, Gwyn Thomas.

Cyngerdd Nadolig Newydd will showcase the 12 songs, which are now available to buy on a CD from the Sain record label.

Gwyn Huws Jones, Elin Fflur, Rhys Meirion, Bob Delyn Bach, Gwyneth Glyn, Angharad Brinn, Côr CF1, Mim Twm Llai... the list of performers includes some of the best known in Wales, encompassing all styles from the world of classical music to country and folk music.

The impressive list of composers, poets and producers includes more than one chaired-bard and award-winning musician. Myrddin ap Dafydd, Caryl Parry Jones, Robat Arwyn, Mererid Hopwood, Twm Morys, Tudur Dylan Jones and Pwyll ap Sion to name but a few.

"There is a great variety of a song style in the new Nadolig Newydd collection," says Llinos Wyn Thomas from Boomerang, the production company responsible for the radio series and CD.

"And since Gwyn Thomas is Wales' national poet, what better choice to present this programme where all the songs can be heard together for the first time."

The Naolig Newydd CD is now available from Sain.

Cyngerdd Nadolig Newydd, BBC Radio Cymru, Saturday 9 December 2006, 6pm; repeated Sunday 10 December, 5pm; and Christmas Day, 10.45am
