BBC extends contract to secure rights to the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe until 2009

The BBC has negotiated a deal to continue live terrestrial television coverage of the prestigious Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe until 2009.

As well as the TV rights to the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, the three-year deal, negotiated with TWI and France-Galop, also includes highlights of the Arc Trials, the French Derby and the French Oaks.

Dominic Coles, BBC Director, Sports Rights and Finance, said: "The Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe is one of world's most prestigious horse races and we are delighted it remains part of the BBC's racing crown jewels for the rest of the decade, alongside the Grand National, the Derby and Royal Ascot.

"This acquisition reinforces our commitment to bringing the very best horse-racing to the widest possible audiences."

Racing fans were able to watch the 2006 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, live from Longchamp, France yesterday on BBC TWO. Clare Balding presented coverage of Europe's richest horse race on Sunday Grandstand.
