Mike Hapgood has been confirmed as the Head of Regional & Local Programmes at BBC South East.

Mike was Acting Head of the region for the last two years, covering for Leo Devine, who has now been confirmed as the Head of BBC North West.

Mike joined the BBC in 1981 as an Education Producer, where his main claim to fame was discovering Simon Mayo. He subsequently took charge of the celebrations of BBC Local Radio's 20th anniversary, before moving on to BBC Radio Solent as Programme Organiser.

After working in Television in Elstree for a time, Mike became Managing Editor of BBC Radio Bristol, and in 1998 he moved over to be Managing Editor at BBC Southern Counties Radio.

Mike says: "I'm really pleased to be able to continue working with the South East region on ambitious and successful projects in technology and journalism."

Andy Griffee, Controller of English Regions, says: "Our television, radio and online service for the South East of England is more successful than ever and we have been delighted to launch dedicated additions of Inside Out and The Politics Show on BBC ONE to the region.

"Most of this achievement is down to Mike Hapgood who is one of our most experienced editors and managers, so I am delighted with his appointment as Head of BBC South East."
